TrueNAS from anywhere
Install the DNSalsa connector from the TrueNAS app catalog, pair it with a code and pick what it should reach. No port forward, no public IP needed.
What you need
- TrueNAS with apps (TrueNAS 24.10 or later).
- A DNSalsa account with Remote. The first month is free, and you pay nothing during it.
Set it up
Install the DNSalsa connector
In TrueNAS, open Apps → Discover Apps, search for DNSalsa and install it. The default settings are fine.
Open its Web UI
Press Web UI on the app. The page shows a pairing code, for example
K7QP-4XM2.Create a hostname with a route
In your dashboard, pick a name and open Setup → Cloudflare Tunnel. As the route, enter the address of what you want to reach, the way your TrueNAS reaches it. For example:
- the TrueNAS web interface:
https://192.168.1.10, with Skip TLS verification on for its self-signed certificate - an app on TrueNAS:
http://192.168.1.10:30141 - Home Assistant on another machine:
http://192.168.1.20:8123
- the TrueNAS web interface:
Pair
Choose DNSalsa connector and enter the code. Within a few seconds the connector starts the tunnel, and your address works.
Change it later from the dashboard
A different route, or up to two extra addresses on the same tunnel: change it in the dashboard. The connector follows within seconds, so you never touch TrueNAS again for it.
Keep it safe
Your router stays closed: the connector opens the tunnel from inside your network. Anything you put on the route becomes reachable from the internet, so only route apps with a proper login, and turn on two-factor authentication where the app offers it. Don't publish the TrueNAS web interface itself unless you really need it from outside.
