Acceptable use

DNSalsa gives you an address on dnsalsa.nl and, with the subscription, a tunnel to your own machine. These are the rules for what you put behind it. They keep the service up for everyone: one misused address can get the whole of dnsalsa.nl blocked.

What it's for

Reaching your own things at home or in your own network: Home Assistant, your router, the dashboard of your solar panels, a game server, a small personal site. Through a tunnel you can add a few extra services next to your main address.

No video streaming through a tunnel

Tunnels run on Cloudflare's network, and Cloudflare's terms don't allow serving video or other large media files through it. That rules out Plex, Jellyfin, Emby and similar media servers through a DNSalsa tunnel, and cameras streaming around the clock, for example to a recorder or a screen that's always on. Checking your cameras in Home Assistant when you want to see what's going on is fine: that's normal use. Dynamic DNS hostnames (no tunnel) point straight at your own IP address and aren't affected by this rule.

Not allowed

Fair use: 100 GB a month

All tunnels of one account together can use 100 GB a month. Normal use of Home Assistant stays far below that, also with several people in a household. You see your usage in the dashboard. At 80% and at 100% you get an email. Nothing switches off automatically: we look at what's going on and contact you if we need to. We also get an alert when an account suddenly uses a lot in a short time, because that usually means video or large downloads.

Keep what you expose safe

Anyone on the internet can open your addresses. Only put services behind them that have their own login, use strong passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where you can. You are responsible for what runs behind your addresses; DNSalsa only points the name at it.

What we do if something's wrong

If an address breaks these rules, or puts the service at risk, we can pause or remove that address or tunnel, and in serious cases disable the account. Where we can, we tell you first by email.
