Home Assistant from anywhere
Install the DNSalsa app in Home Assistant, enter a code in your dashboard, and open Home Assistant at your own address. No port forward, no public IP needed.
What you need
- Home Assistant OS or Supervised, so you can install apps. Running Home Assistant Container or Core? Use the Docker guide.
- A DNSalsa account with Remote. The first month is free, and you pay nothing during it.
Set it up
Create a hostname
In your dashboard, pick a name such as
myhome.dnsalsa.nland open Setup → Home Assistant.Add the DNSalsa app
Press the button below. It opens your own Home Assistant with the DNSalsa app repository ready to add; the same button is in your dashboard.
Prefer doing it by hand? Add
https://github.com/DNSalsa/dnsalsa-haunder Repositories in the app store.Install and open it
Install the DNSalsa app and start it. It shows up in the sidebar and shows a pairing code, for example
K7QP-4XM2.Enter the code
Type or paste the code in your dashboard. Within a few seconds the app starts the tunnel, and your address works.
Let Home Assistant trust the tunnel
The app checks whether Home Assistant accepts traffic from the tunnel. If not, it shows the exact steps: Settings → System → Network → HTTP Server → Reverse proxy, turn on Trust X-Forwarded-For and add the address the app shows. Save, and confirm after Home Assistant restarts.
Use it on your phone
Open
https://myhome.dnsalsa.nlanywhere. In the Home Assistant app on your phone, set it as the external URL, so the app works both at home and on the road.
Keep it safe
Your router stays closed: the app opens the tunnel from inside your home. Your Home Assistant login still decides who gets in, so turn on two-factor authentication for every user. The app also recommends turning on IP banning, which blocks an address after 10 failed logins.
Only need dynamic DNS?
The same app also keeps a free hostname on your home IP address, without a tunnel. Choose Setup → Dynamic DNS → Home Assistant app in the dashboard instead. You then need a port forward on your router to reach Home Assistant with it.
